Octocopter vs Hexacopter: Which Configuration for Heavy Payload?

Technical · 8 min read

The instinct is that more rotors is better. It is not automatically true, and the difference in cost and transport footprint is substantial.

What the extra axes buy you

An 8-axis 16-rotor airframe spreads total thrust across sixteen motor-propeller pairs instead of twelve. Each pair works less hard and runs cooler, which extends sustainable duty cycles.

It also provides redundancy: losing one rotor on a sixteen-rotor platform leaves fifteen, which is usually enough to land safely. On a twelve-rotor platform the margin is thinner. Over people or structures, that difference is a compliance question, not a preference.

What the extra axes cost you

Weight, size and money. An octocopter of equivalent payload is larger and heavier than a hexacopter, which means more battery mass to carry and a bigger vehicle to transport it.

For cargo work on a defined route with vehicle access, a hexacopter often delivers more kilograms per dollar per day. The 6-axis LY300 is the clearest example in our range: 230–250 kg recommended payload on a smaller, lighter airframe than an equivalent octocopter.

The decision framework

Choose hexacopter when: the route is defined, access is good, you are not flying over people, and cost per kilogram delivered is the dominant metric.

Choose octocopter when: you fly over people or structures, wind is a factor, you need sustained duty cycles without thermal throttling, or your payload is above 300 kg — at which point octocopter configurations dominate the market for good reason.

A note on coaxial versus offset layouts

Not all 16-rotor airframes are built the same way. Coaxial pairs stack two propellers on one arm; offset layouts place them side by side. Coaxial is more compact, offset is generally more efficient. Ask which layout a manufacturer uses and why — the answer tells you how much engineering went into the airframe.
