100 kg vs 200 kg Payload Drone: How to Choose

Selection · 7 min read

Roughly two thirds of the enquiries we receive specify a payload class larger than the job requires. Oversizing is not free — it costs more to buy, ship, insure and crew. Here is how to size correctly.

Start with the working load, not the maximum

Write down the heaviest single item you will routinely move. Not the heaviest thing you might conceivably move one day — the routine working load. That number, plus 20% margin, is your payload requirement.

If your routine load is 70 kg, a 100 kg class airframe is correct. A 200 kg airframe costs more and delivers no operational benefit on that route.

Route distance changes the answer

Payload and range trade against each other directly. A 200 kg airframe carrying 100 kg over a short route is running well inside its envelope and will complete more sorties per battery cycle than the same aircraft at maximum load.

If your route is long, a larger airframe carrying a partial load can outperform a smaller airframe at its limit — because the larger aircraft has more battery capacity to spend on distance rather than lift.

Crew size and transport footprint are real constraints

A 100 kg class platform typically runs on a two-person crew and folds into a vehicle. A 450 kg platform needs a larger crew, a larger vehicle and more setup time. On a site with restricted access, the smaller aircraft may be the only one that can operate at all.

This is why our LY200 exists in two versions: a 4-axis model that prioritises transport footprint, and an 8-axis model that prioritises stability and redundancy at the same payload ceiling.

When to step up a class

Step up if any of these are true: your routine load exceeds 80% of the smaller class's recommended payload; your site is above 2,000 m and you need the full load; you are flying over people or structures and need rotor redundancy; or you need to move single items that cannot be split.

Otherwise, buy the smaller airframe and spend the difference on batteries. Sortie rate wins more jobs than payload headroom.
